Chapter 13
It was getting dusk as the angels descended from the sky in a cloud of white feathers and pompous self-righteousness.
Dazielle strode over, her wings ruffling behind her. âWhat have you got?â
âWe havenât uncovered the body, but Iâm pretty sure youâll find Dewey Lavern in that mud.â
âPuddlesâ nephew?â Dazielle squinted at the ground, not looking convinced. âHeâs not back yet?â
âHeâs not coming back from this,â I said. âCan you smell the magic?â
Dazielle sniffed the air and frowned. âItâs the same curse.â
âWhoever killed Serath also got to Dewey.â
Dazielle flapped around as she set her angels to work securing the area. She knelt by the exposed hand and carefully scraped away more mud. It didnât take long before she revealed the frozen, terrified looking face of Dewey.
âYouâre right.â She looked up at me. âHow did you know heâd be here?â
âI didnât. I wasnât even looking for him. Iâm still on the hunt for Rhett.â I glanced at Suki, who stood looking nervous as the angels hurried around her. âSuki suggested we try the forest. We learned that someone had been lurking around last night. We followed the trail, and Wiggles did the rest.â
Wiggles lifted his nose. âIâll take payment in fairy cakes.â
Dazielle snorted and shook her head, her attention turning to Fallon. âWhatâs your involvement?â
âI tracked the killer as they looked for a place to dispose of the body.â She slid a foot toward Wiggles. âWe should set up our own crack task force. You can be my faithful pony, hunting out dead bodies, and I will solve the crimes.â
Wiggles turned his back and cocked his leg up a tree.
âFallon and Wiggles the Wonder Pony,â Fallon continued. âSolving the crimes the angels have no clue about. Weâre bound to be busy.â
Dazielle glared at Fallon. âMove out of the way and let my team get to work. I want to know everything you saw last night.â
âWeâve already told you what we know.â I did not like the accusation lacing through Dazielleâs words.
âTell me again. Who led you here?â Dazielle asked.
I sighed. âFallon most of the way. Wiggles sniffed out the body.â
Dazielle turned on Fallon, who studied Wiggles with an unhealthily obsessive look in her eye. âWhy didnât you report this yesterday when you discovered someone in the forest?â
Fallon picked something out of her hair and inspected it. âThere are always odd bods skulking around my forest. If I reported them all, youâd spend your whole time in here, and I donât want that.â
âWhat made you suspicious of this particular individual?â
Fallon shrugged. âThey used cloaking magic. You donât walk around hidden in this forest without me knowing about it. They were up to something dubious.â
âYou didnât see them with the body? It wouldnât be easy to transport a body through the forest,â Dazielle said.
âThey could have come back during my naptime,â Fallon said. âA wood nymph needs her beauty sleep. When I lost sight of them, I headed to my dwelling. I had a half-hour nap and continued on my rounds. I wasnât alerted to anything unusual.
